Kowloon, our tracks

Tres hombres fuman sentados sobre cajones de plástico. Uno se sacó una de las botas de goma y se masajea el pie. Miran un rato al piso, pegan otra seca al faso, y vuelven sus ojos sobre las pantallas de sus máquinas. Un mensaje de texto, un juego, fotos. Más atrás, bajo un toldo verde de plástico, otros cuatro juegan a las cartas. Visten guardapolvos blancos y hablan gritándose por encima de sus risas. Espíritus absortos en su escape. Se abre una puerta, y otro hombre, camisa ochentona con rayas oblicuas rojas, marrones y grises, se aparece empujando un carro con cajas de cartón. Alrededor suyo, las paredes son de un ladrillo color marrón ocre y los aires acondicionados se amontonan unos sobre otros goteando calor y humedad. El suelo está lleno de charquitos de agua, grasa, y puchos. Colgado de un caño, un paraguas rojo y blanco que alguien dejo a secar. Fruta podrida, aceite quemado, carne y sopa. Uno de los tachos de basura está abierto. Respiro humo, pero no sé de dónde, o de quién viene. Me giro y sigo caminando por el garito de poca luz. Negocios de ropa y suvenires baratos. Alguien intenta venderme un buda chiquito de madera. Al final del pasillo, la calle. Y sobre la vereda del frente, unas cañas de bambú. Obra en construcción. Bocinas y sirenas, y mis ojos tratan de seguir los pasos apresurados. La ciudad late. Detrás, el callejón descansa.

En español, Nawel por lo general se escribe como Nahuel. En árabe están Nawal (regalo), mientras que en bretón está Nahüel. Elegimos la transliteración más cercana y temprana posible del nombre Mapundungun, con w, ya que originalmente era solo un idioma hablado. En Mapundungun (el idioma de la tierra del pueblo mapuche, nativos americanos de lo que hoy son Chile y Argentina), Nawel significa yaguareté. Según una leyenda en Argentina, uno de los primos de Nessie, el monstruo escocés, habita en el lago Nawel Huapi. El primo del monstruo se llama Nawelito.
In Spanish, Nawel is often spelled as Nahuel. In Arabic, there’s Nawal (gift), while in Breton there is Nahüel. We chose the closest and earliest transliteration of the Mapundungun name, with w, as this was originally only a spoken language. In Mapundungun (the language of the earth of the Mapuche peoples, native Americans of what is today Chile and Argentina), Nawel means jaguar. According to a legend in Argentina, one of the cousins of Nessie, the Scottish monster, inhabits in the Lake Nawel Huapi. The monster’s cousin is called Nawelito.

matéman, el primer ‘dron’ cordobés Juanchila, 2019.11.30

Este dibujo va dedicado a Enrique ‘El Ñato’ Paez, histórico y muy querido realizador audiovisual cordobés. Fotógrafo, camarógrafo, director, documentalista, ilustrador gráfico… El título se lo robé a Jorge Pablo Gilli. El dibujo aduce a cuando, cubriendo las carreras del rally cordobés, el Ñato se asomaba por el helicóptero del canal de televisión para filmar los autos. Me lo contaron, nunca lo había visto hasta que vi la foto que publicó Gilli. En esa foto se lo ve a Ñato en el helicóptero del programa Motores en Marcha (Motta Producciones) junto al piloto Norberto Acordeiro.
Además de colgarse de helicópteros para filmar el rally de Córdoba, el Ñato fue ilustrador gráfico para el ya desaparecido diario “Los Principios”, por el cual supo ser enviado especial a Comodoro Rivadavia durante la Guerra de Malvinas. Al Ñato lo conocí poco, gracias a mi viejo Carlos ‘El Gallego’ Moreno, Ana su incondicional compañera de ruta, y algunos sus amigos.
He leído que trabajó con otros genios cordobeses como José Antonio “el Pepe” Bellotti y Jorge “Jetón” Bravo con quienes produjo fotografías y cortos publicitarios en los ’60 en 16 milímetros. Que fue contemporáneo de otros maestros audiovisuales cordobeces como Guillermo López. Amigo y compañero, de Carlos ‘El Gato’ Ludueña, otro maestro cordobés de la fotógrafía y de todo eso que va de lo audiovisual… y los gatos. Recordaré su risa en los asados a los que pude colarme con mi papá, el autito a control remoto que nos trajo a mí y mis hermanos de EEUU (que nunca anduvo), y su Jeep estacionado en el garage de Romagoza. This drawing is dedicated to Enrique ‘El Ñato’ Paez, a historical and much-loved Cordobean audiovisual producer. Photographer, cameraman, director, documentary filmmaker, graphic designer and illustrator …
The title for this drawing I stole it from Jorge Pablo Gilli. It evokes when, covering the world rally races in Cordoba, Ñato would literally hang from the television channel’s helicopter to film the cars. They told me about this when growing up, but I had never seen it until I saw the photo published by Gilli (a common friend). That photo shows Ñato in the helicopter of the Motores en Marcha tv-program (Motta Producciones) with pilot Norberto Acordeiro.
Other than hanging from helicopters to film the Córdoba rally, Ñato was a graphic illustrator for the now-defunct newspaper “Los Principios” (Principles), where he was a special envoy to Comodoro Rivadavia during the Falklands War. I didn’t get to know Ñato much personally, thanks to my old man, Carlos ‘El Gallego’ Moreno, Ana, his unconditional road companion, and some of his friends.
I have read that he worked with other Córdoba geniuses such as José Antonio “el Pepe” Bellotti and Jorge “Jetón” Bravo with whom he did photography and advertising shorts in the 1960s in 16 millimeters. That he was a contemporary of another Cordobean audiovisual maestros such as Guillermo López. Friend and colleague of Carlos ‘El Gato’ (The Cat) Ludueña, another Cordobean maestro in photography and all that that goes from the audiovisual … and cats. His cinematographic work included the documentaries ‘Ansenuza’, ‘Pampa de Achala’, ‘Nosotros los cordobeces’, and the tv-series ‘El musiquero’ (by José Luis Serrano, or ‘Doña Jovita’ as his comic character is known, and in collaboration with Ricardo Vargas).
Definetely, a beautiful human being. A ‘painter of instants’ as journalist and friend ‘Gonio’ Ferrari describes in his blog. I will remember his laugh in those asados I was able to sneak into with my dad, the remote-controlled car that he brought to me and my brothers from the USA (which we were never able to make work), and his Jeep, parked in the garage in Romagoza. Para mi viejo Este dibujo está inspirado en dos grandes artistas que mi Papá admiraba y seguía mucho. El primero es Norman Percevel Rockwell, dibujante e ilustrador neoyorquino cuyo famoso cuadro “Triple Autoretrato” (1960) es la musa para este dibujo. El otro es Juan Jose Delfini, dibujante e ilustrador ucachense. El retrato de Chidoro-Gallego Moreno está dedicado a Delfini, y es un homenaje barato a un cuadro que él mismo pinto para mi viejo allá por los años 70. El original está en Salsipuedes. Hoy es 22 del 02 de 2020… Y no, el mapa no está dado vuelta.
To my Dad This drawing is inspired by two great artists my dad admired and very much followed. The first is Norman Percel Rockwell, New York born painter and illustrator whose famous painting “Triple Self-Portrait” (1960) is the muse for this drawing. The other is Juan Jose Delfini, painter and illustrator from Ucacha (Córdoba), from where my Dad was from. The portrait with Chidoro-Gallego Moreno is dedicated to Delfini, and it is a cheap homage to a painting of his which he gave my dad as a present back in the 70s. The original is in Salsipuedes (Get Out If You Can, Córdoba). Today is 22 of 02 of 2020… And no, the map isn’t upside down.

Tidy city, our tracks

Fixed feet, the marching band plays. Sweet silent tunes. Sean, Dylan, Papa. I hear your music. Tidy city. Perfect pavement.

Suomen, our tracks

Empty street. A single torn cement bag below a raised tram track, and a borrowed wicker chair, witted morning break. The work site is resting. At Senate Square time stops with a song of recorded bells, and starts again as a trumpet sounds. An old man plays one melody, then he departs. Suomen, small, tidy city of grey stoned paths, where café signs tell roller-skaters not to pass. At corners, cables trickle from open drain pipes, summer stalactites, to fend off, perhaps, the long winter’s ice. Yesterday, navigating through scattered islets and gusts of cool air, Today after the rain, water paints the Baltic through the tiles. Merikasarminkatu, empty street. Allegro, a train, 11:30PM, the lighted sky. Helskinki, this place we pass by.

Pero no solo es el impacto sobre el comportamiento de los animales… con la cuarentena muchas personas se han abocado a la creatividad, limpiando, acomodando, arreglando cosas. Muchas se han puesto a pintar, o incluso a experimentar en la cocina… -cartel en la ventana: ¡Muchas Gracias! Doctores, enfermer@s, vendedores, repartidores, agricultores, cuidadores de ancianos, artistas, músic@s… Gente que ayuda y que sonríe (a veces) desde sus casas -fauna (de derecha a izquierda, de abajo hacia arriba): gato higiénico, matéman, sapo, huevos de pascua, gaviota, mosquito de campo (en ciudad), liebre -otros: caja con bártulos, bártulos, mate cocido, chipacas quemadas (sin gluten), horno (roto)

Connecting places, our tracks

As we walk through the streets of the central island the first thing I notice is the light. A warm coating covers the old stone buildings, and the soft summer sun transports me to a place that feels like home. A sense of surprise and wonder overcomes me, I am in Stockholm and la Provence at the same time.

when you let the water boil… and you have to ‘cut’ it
No hirvás (hierves) el agua para cebar, pierde oxígeno, destruye la yerba… No lo hagas. Y si lo hacés, cortala con agua fría para bajarle la temperatura.
Just don’t boil water when preparing maté, it loses oxygen, destroys the herbs… Just, don’t. And if you do, ‘cut’ (cool) it with cold water to bring the temperature down.
